The short and long term effects of sleep deprivation are real. Brain fog, exhaustion, lack of motivation, and decreased memory. Not to mention poor mood and irritability. But long term sleep deprivation, or even poor sleep, can increase your risk of major diseases. 

Sleep plays a roll in healing and repairing your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing lack of sleep is linked to an increased risk of kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure.  

Sleep also helps keep a healthy balance of hormones that make you feel hungry and full. When sleep deprived ghrelin (hormone that increases appetite) goes up and leptin (protein that regulates fat storage) goes down which may lead you to feel hungrier and can ultimately impact body weight.
